Structure & Freedom is not just this studio's name. It's how the work is produced, and what the work represents.
For the artists who work on each commission, concrete structure — clear, repeatable design guidelines — is what makes creative freedom possible in the first place. The same is true of the name at the center of the Tetragrammaton collection: a documented structure of history gives way to a freedom of meaning, left for each person to pursue for themselves.
Structure & Freedom Studio creates a growing collection of large-scale symbolic installations primarily built around the Tetragrammaton, the four Hebrew letters that form the personal name of God. We work with a range of institutions — museums, universities, and other organizations — to place original, large-format work into spaces where people already come together to learn, teach, and convene. The work rewards close examination as much as it does a glance from across the room.
For institutions seeking a more immersive encounter, a commission can extend beyond a single installation into a full exhibition — multiple works presented together alongside supporting historical and educational materials that deepen the experience without prescribing its meaning.
Every commission is produced in partnership with artists who have developmental disabilities, engaged, paid, and credited as collaborators — not as a separate outreach effort, but as the way the work gets made.
The finished pieces demand sustained attention, precision, and pattern-level thinking — strengths the artists who work on each commission bring to it. The studio's model is built to make that labor visible and properly compensated, not incidental to the finished piece.
Each commission is also made with a sponsor organization — for example, a nonprofit serving artists with developmental disabilities — that provides employment infrastructure and fabrication support. For the sponsor, a commission can raise its profile in the community and open additional marketing and funding opportunities.
The name at the center of the Tetragrammaton collection carries a documented history spanning nearly three thousand years. Its earliest widely accepted inscription appears on the Mesha Stele, or Moabite Stone — a Moabite royal monument dated to roughly 840 BCE, now held in the Louvre. Within the biblical textual tradition specifically, the oldest surviving physical witness is a pair of small silver scrolls unearthed at Ketef Hinnom, outside Jerusalem, dated to around 600 BCE and inscribed with a priestly blessing that invokes the name directly.
The name's presence continues through the Dead Sea Scrolls, the library of manuscripts discovered in caves near Qumran and dating from the third century BCE to the first century CE. In several of these texts, scribes set the name apart in an older paleo-Hebrew script even while writing the surrounding text in the square script of their own day — a deliberate scribal practice, commonly understood as an act of reverence, preserved for two thousand years.
Within the biblical narrative itself, the name first appears in Genesis 2:4, and is later spoken in the first person in Exodus 3, where it is identified as a name meant to carry forward across generations. Taken together, these sources form a documented thread across nearly three thousand years, in which the name's four consonants remain unchanged. Within the original text, the name appears roughly 6,800 times — more often than any other name or title used for God in those scriptures.
Despite this depth of documentation, the name itself has grown unfamiliar. Jewish tradition ceased pronouncing it aloud roughly two thousand years ago, substituting titles such as "Adonai" or "Elohim" in its place; most English Bible translations followed a similar path, rendering it as "LORD" or "GOD" rather than transliterating it directly; and Islam, while affirming the same God of Abraham, calls on a different name — Allah — from a different root. A name inscribed on stone, folded into silver, and copied by hand for two millennia has an extensive documentary record, yet is unfamiliar to many.
The name’s original pronunciation was never recorded, because ancient Hebrew was written with consonants alone. Many scholars favor “Yahweh,” a reconstruction based on early Greek transcriptions, comparative Semitic linguistics, and shortened forms of the name in Hebrew personal names. The question is not settled.
“Jehovah” emerged later, in the Middle Ages. The Masoretes, the scribes who added vowel signs to the Hebrew text, attached the vowels of “Adonai” to the name as a reminder to read that word aloud. Combining those vowels with the four consonants is the commonly given explanation for “Jehovah.”
The two forms therefore differ in kind. Yahweh is a scholarly estimate of how the name was spoken, while Jehovah is widely accepted as a hybrid form that became familiar through English Bibles, including the King James Version.
That history is the reason this collection exists as more than artistic beauty.
Structure & Freedom presents this history and this name as an invitation to inquiry, not a claim on belief — accessible to secular institutions and communities of faith alike.
